Gilmour Primary School

Parent / Carer Support

At Gilmour Primary we offer workshops with our experienced SEND Parent support from external agencies and own in-house support. Your voice matters, and feel comforted by the support of other parents/carers within our school community.

Keep an eye out for our external partners/Outreach parent groups, whose offer of support has expertise across the four broad areas of SEND.

What is a sensory diet?

If your child is accessing a sensory diet as part of their SEND/EHC Plan provision, then we are working hard to provide a structured way to include activities that alert, organise and calm your child so that their bodies feel regulated, motivated and ready to engage with their learning.

At home you could support your child’s sensory needs by:

  • creating a calm space. You might like to set up a quiet, cosy space with cushions, blankets and/or a tent.
  • using soft, warm lighting or fairy lights to create a calm and safe environment to support emotional regulation (managing feelings).
  • having predictable routines and talking through any changes in advance.
  • offering ‘heavy work’ that uses deep pressure, such as jumping on a mini-trampoline, wrapping up tight inside a blanket or sharing a ‘squeeze’ (hug).
  • using fidget tools, that your child can ‘squeeze’ ‘pop’ ‘twist’ or feel the texture of.
  • provide healthy crunchy foods, chewy snacks or a chew-buddy.
  • enjoying ‘messy’ play together, such as creating your own sensory trays using rice, oats, sand or glitter or any other texture your child may like to explore!
